न ब्रूयात् सत्यमप्रियम्

सत्यं ब्रूयात् प्रियं ब्रूयात् न ब्रूयात् सत्यमप्रियम्।
प्रियञ्च नानृतम् ब्रूयात् एष धर्म सनातनः ॥
You should always tell the truth. You should also be pleasant. So, if the hard truth hurts, you should tell it pleasantly as long as you are not lying. This is the age old rule of virtue.

  1. The mening is not as given.....It is as follows:
    'You should say truth only...Also you should say truths which are pleasing.....But you are not supposed to say the truth which is hurting to othres(un pleasant truth)....and also you are not supposed to say the pleasant truth when it is lie. This is the sanathana dharma.(From Manusmrithi)
